The first week of August is normally one of the hottest and muggiest of the year and this week, so far, has been no exception. Still, even the weather didn’t keep the crowd away from National Night Out Against Crime, an event held every year on the first Tuesday of August for each police precinct and the area it serves.

Wal-Mart has just changed the game with respect to environmental issues. Now it doesn't matter whether Congress' new cap-and-trade law meets all its promises, nor whether the G-8 leaders dithered rather than acted on environmental issues.

NYC volunteers help public housing residents recycle |

The New York Times published a feature about a group of brave and lovely women who are going door to door in Morningside Heights teaching people living in public housing to recycle. It is amazing to me that so many buildings in so many urban cities do not have recycling programs, considering the large number of residents, the abundance of trash and the potential economic savings.
