Stringer confirms intent to help diversity community boards

Also Said State Senate Democrats Got What They Deserved

By Rachel Schwartz

On June 10th Manhattan Borough President, Scott M. Stringer, spoke
Scott Stringer at a Flatiron/23rd Street Partnership and TD Bank Spring Speaker Series event which was held at the Bank branch at 260 Park Avenue South.  The event was well attended and the audience proved very interactive.

Stringer spoke about several important initiatives he's undertaken, like diversifying Community Boards by bringing in a more representative group of people in each neighborhood.  He is also working on an Urban Planning Graduate school program that will link Urban Planners with the Community Boards to in order to improve the development of Manhattan neighborhoods.

With respect to the environment, Stringer feels that Manhattan is still a food desert and that things need to change dramatically if we are to address the growing prevalence of asthma and other health-related issues that are the result of continuing pollution. Stringer has helped launch green initiatives like Go Green East Harlem, which helps establish urban gardens and provide locally grown produce to those in neighborhoods where fresh, healthy food is not affordable.

The audience's major question for the Borough President was his thoughts on what is happening in Albany and the dramatic events in the Senate.  He said that, as a member of the party, he thinks the Democrats got what they deserved in addition to being played; not standing strong on Democratic principles, i.e. behaving like Republicans, is what caused the coup to happen.
