An Important Message for Our Newsletter Subscribers
Dear Friend of the 23rd Street Association: Whether
it is by championing a neighborhood issue, providing great networking
opportunities or bringing you news and information to help your small
business grow, the 23rd Street Association has strived for over 80
years to be of real help to Manhattanites from river to river. Our
newsletter keeps you in the know about what's happening in the
neighborhood as well as providing information, notice of events and
news that is of special interest to business and residents alike. Now we're asking for your help. The
continuing economic situation has been tough on everyone, including
your 23rd Street Association. We've had to cut back on events and
reduce the frequency of producing our newsletter. At the same time we
are about to introduce new and incredibly meaningful benefits to our
members, like health insurance coverage you can actually afford. We
hope that you, as someone who has enjoyed receiving our newsletter,
won't let us down. We have several new membership options, including half-year and pay-by-month payment plans and hope you will join the Association so we can continue to provide value and support in all your endeavors. We've made it easier to join the Association. In
addition to accepting credit cards and checks, the Association is happy
to announce that you may now use PayPal to renew your membership and
sign up for our events. (Click here.) For more information, please email rachel.schwartz@23rdstreet.org or call 212-255-3037.

Second Avenue Subway Delay
Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer Calls For Immediate Inspector General Investigation of New Delay in 2nd Avenue Subway
The nightmare continues.
The Second Avenue Subway has become one of the great boondoggles of New York City construction history.
After
decades of planning, billions of dollars committed, sidewalks and
businesses disrupted -- the MTA wants to delay this project again?

Learning The Art Of Listening
Steven Berglas, Ph.D.
You're tuning out and you don't even know it. Slow down and open your ears.
Seasoned management consultant Harry Levinson wrote a book called Ready, Fire, Aim: Avoiding Management By Impulse.
Its core message: Only after considering a series of options--and not
just the ones apparent in the heat of the moment--can you hope to make
consistently decent decisions. In short, it's about the importance of
listening.
Obvious stuff, right? And yet, no matter how
eloquently (or persistently) conveyed, somehow that message doesn't
really sink in--especially with the entrepreneurial crowd. Blame it on
DNA: Entrepreneurs by nature are anti-authoritarian juvenile
delinquents. Taking advice isn't their thing.

Spotlight On: Inn On 23rd Street
The Inn on 23rd is a family owned
and operated bed & breakfast in the heart of Manhattan's Chelsea
District. Owner Annette Fisherman and her husband loved staying in bed and
breakfasts on their travels, so when they sold their Victorian house in Port
Washington, they decided to move into the city, open a B&B and furnish it
with the contents of their former home. Ms. Fisherman says she chose Chelsea
because she likes the neighborhood-'it fits who I am.' She took note of what
they liked about the intimacy of B&B's and the convenience of nice hotels to
create what they like to call the "Urban B&B," or the best of both worlds.
The creation of this concept has been 20 years in the making, from the
collecting of antiques and artifacts to constantly hosting guests at their
former home. The Inn offers travelers a very special way to enjoy New York City
with all the conveniences of a fine hotel and the added bonus of an intimate
personal touch. http://www.innon23rd.com/

Loves Mountains
NY
Loves Mountains is an all-volunteer environmental advocacy organization
committed to raising awareness in New York about mountain top removal
coal mining (MTR) in Appalachia. MTR, a radical form of strip mining in
which whole tops of mountains are blown off and waste is dumped in
nearby streams and valleys, is severely threatening the land and
culture of Appalachia as well as the watershed upon which the
Southeastern Unites States depends. Many Americans contribute to MTR
through their power plants' purchase and burning of coal from MTR mine
sites, including New Yorkers.

Wal-Mart's Environmental Game-Changer
By Rosabeth Moss Kanter
Wal-Mart has just changed the game
with respec t to environmental issues. Now it doesn't matter whether
Congress' new cap-and-trade law meets all its promises, nor whether the
G-8 leaders dithered rather than acted on environmental issues.
Wal-Mart's unilateral decision to put its purchasing and
communication power behind going green also shows that a single company
using its unique clout can accelerate public action to reduce
greenhouse gases and reverse climate change. By rolling out an
environmental labelling program disclosing to consumers the
environmental costs of
making products sold at Wal-Mart, the $401 billion retail behemoth has
transformed green standards from nice-to-have to must-have.
