SBA Chief: I Know 'What It Will Take'
By RAYMUND
FLANDEZ
Karen G. Mills has a big job: Get struggling small businesses the help
they need to power the U.S.
into economic recovery.
 Small
Business Administration chief Karen G. Mills
Four months into her term, the
new Small Business Administration chief says there's been measurable
progress in getting financing and other assistance to the country's 27
million entrepreneurs. Since the passage of the Recovery Act in February,
the SBA has approved $5.7 billion in loans and seen 840 financial lenders
renew their participation in the agency's 7(a) or ARC loan programs.
Under Mills, a venture capitalist and Tootsie Roll heiress from Maine, the
56-year-old agency has also implemented new loan programs, such as
inventory financing for car and auto dealerships.

National Night Out Against Crime 2009
By Sabina Mollot
The first week of August is normally one of the hottest and muggiest of
the year and this week, so far, has been no exception. Still, even the
weather didn't keep the crowd away from National Night Out Against Crime,
an event held every year on the first Tuesday of August for each police
precinct and the area it serves.

Spotlight
On: Inn On 23rd Street

The Inn on 23rd is a family owned and operated bed & breakfast in the
heart of Manhattan's Chelsea District.
Owner Annette Fisherman and her husband loved staying in bed and breakfasts
on their travels, so when they sold their Victorian house in Port
Washington, they decided to move into the city, open a B&B and
furnish it with the contents of their former home. Ms. Fisherman says she
chose Chelsea
because she likes the neighborhood-'it fits who I am.' She took note of
what they liked about the intimacy of B&B's and the convenience of
nice hotels to create what they like to call the "Urban
B&B," or the best of both worlds. The creation of this concept
has been 20 years in the making, from the collecting of antiques and
artifacts to constantly hosting guests at their former home. The Inn
offers travelers a very special way to enjoy New York City with all the conveniences
of a fine hotel and the added bonus of an intimate personal touch.

12 Reasons Everyone Should Care About
The Environment
I get a lot of questions
these days about going green. Some of them have merit, others are
pretty silly. One of the most common, though, is a simple question
that's actually really tough to answer: Why should I care about the
environment?
