| Newsletter - Neighborhood Update _____________________________________________________ | | | | Bellevue Psych Ward May Get Medical Provider The community surrounding Bellevue Hospital in Kips Bay got a welcome concession from the Health and Hospitals Corporation, which oversees the public hospital for the city. The city wanted to turn the old psychiatric facility, which is currently operating as a homeless intake shelter, into a stately luxury hotel. But the Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) has sent out letters to 92 medical providers to gauge interest in subleasing space. Any party interested in the facility would have the option of taking a tour of the building. "I am delighted that HHC has reopened its process and is working with the community to reach out to a variety of developers that would satisfy the community's desire to incorporate medical uses, like sub-acute care or assisted living, at the Bellevue site,' said Rep. Carolyn Maloney, in a statement. By Dan Rivoli Our Town | | Business Groups Ill Over Paid Sick days The city's chambers of commerce are gearing up to oppose a City Council bill that would require companies to provide employees with up to nine paid sick days annually, saying it would be a burden for small businesses. Opposition is slowly building among groups worried that a City Council bill requiring companies to provide employees with as many as nine paid sick days per year would place a burden on small businesses. Earlier this week, the Manhattan and Staten Island Chambers of Commerce sent an online survey to members to find out where they stand on the proposal, which would compel businesses with 10 or more employees to provide nine paid sick days, and those with fewer than 10 workers to give five. Fines would be levied at a rate of $1,000 per violation. The other boroughs' chambers are expected to send out similar surveys after Labor Day. Covering 35,000 square feet, it's the largest of its kind in the city. With an initial grant of $500,000 from Clean Air Communities and an additional investment from the studio, a team of landscape architects and engineers installed a variety of sedums and other drought-resistant plants that require minimal maintenance and can survive New York's bitter winters. By producing oxygen and absorbing excess storm water, the studio's garden is greening the city and setting a model for eco-friendly development. "I've been an environmentalist most of my life, and I'd like to promote that mind-set," says Stuart Suna, co-founder of Silvercup Studios. Rockefeller Center The lavish formal gardens on these rooftops green midtown's skyline. Metropolitan Museum of Art Nature installations of the roof of the cultural landmark draw many viewers.
