Rose Associates Named Stuy-Town Transition
Manager
|
Rose Associates
Inc. was tapped to help manage Stuyvesant Town/Peter Cooper Village's transition
to a new owner as the Tishman Speyer-led partnership prepares to hand back the
keys on its disastrous investment.

Rose managed the
huge rent-regulated complex on the East side for roughly four years when it was
owned by MetLife, which built it for returning World War II veterans and their
families. MetLife sold the complex to the Tishman Speyer-led group in 2006 for
$5.4 billion. The investment quickly unraveled as the partnership failed to meet
its aggressive plan to deregulate units and raise rents as sharply as it had
hoped. Tishman Speyer missed a $16.1 million payment last month and then
announced it would relinquish the investment to creditors. CW Capital Asset
Management, a special servicer firm charged with protecting the interest of the
senior bond holders, will resume control. Read more

Managi ng Technology 'Cloud Computing':
What Exactly Is It, Anyway? Everybody's talking
about it. Here's what you need to know.
For a lot of
small-business owners, "cloud computing" is the latest IT buzzword to leave them
scratching their heads. To demystify things, here's a primer for companies
looking to wade into cloud services for the first time.
What are cloud services?
Broadly speaking,
any service or program sent over an Internet connection can be considered a
cloud service. An outside vendor runs the servers and software, so the buyer
doesn't have to worry about the technical issues in-house-and can focus on its
own business.
The services come
in a number of forms. Many businesses are already familiar with one aspect of
cloud computing: software delivered over the Web. Along with email services like
Google Inc.'s Gmail, there are programs that help salespeople keep track of
customer information, such as Salesforce.com Inc.'s software, and backup
data-storage services from providers such as Amazon.com Inc.
Some businesses
don't just use software services, they buy computing power from vendors such as
Verizon Communications Inc.-much like buying power from a utility. Let's say a
retailer expects lots of additional business during the holidays, and its
in-house servers can't handle the load of customer orders. The company might pay
a vendor for the use of its servers, to shoulder part of the computing work as
the need arises.
Other companies,
meanwhile, might buy computing power on a regular basis. They might drop one or
more in-house servers entirely-or not buy the hardware in the first place-and
let a vendor run their vital programs on its machines. Once again, the buyer
would pay a fee based on how much computing power it used. Read more

Olympians Go Green As They Go for
Gold
|
They don't just
spend hours each day training to be the world's best athletes. They also
recycle, compost, drive hybrids or volunteer for environmental causes. Who are
these green Olympians?
As the Winter Olympics begins Friday in Vancouver,
Mother Nature Network profiles a dozen eco-minded members of Team USA. One
built a home using renewable resources, another designed a 100% recycled
polyester snowboarding pant and jacket and yet another has a charity that
sells hemp sweatbands.
Here's its
look at athletes eager to save the planet: Angela
Ruggiero, hockey (pictured above.) Three-time
medalist Ruggiero, who's set to make her fourth Winter Olympics appearance this
year as a defenseman on the American women's ice hockey team, is an active
member of 350.org, an international campaign focused on inspiring the world
to find solutions for the climate crisis.
Seth Wescott,
snowboarding. Wescott comes to
the 2010 games as the reigning Olympic gold medalist in snowboard cross -
that's a downhill race with a lot of bumps and jumps involved. He's on the board
of directors for Maine Huts and Trails, a 180-mile recreational corridor in
western Maine. He also built a home at Sugarloaf ski and golf resort using
renewable resources and other green practices. Read more ...
