The 23rd Street
Association, in partnership with The Players Club, held an open-house cocktail
reception on March 27 at 16 Gramercy Park.
John Martello, Executive Director of The Players, and Sharon Ullman,
President of the 23rd Street
Association, greeted over 200 guests who attended the event.
The Gothic
Revival townhouse at 16 Gramercy
Park was first built in
1845 for the banker Elihu Townsend. In 1888, the great 19th century American
actor Edwin Booth purchased it and asked his friend architect Stanford White to
turn it into the club he had long envisioned. Over the decades, some of the
most renowned men and women of arts and letters have called The Players their
home away from home, including Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway, John Steinbeck,
and Eugene O'Neill. In 1963, The Players was designated a National Historic
Landmark.
