Solar One Attends State-Wide Solar Energy Strategy Session

On Wednesday February 6th, Solar One Executive Director Chris Collins and Advocacy Coordinator Chris Neidl took part in "Working Together to Support Solar Energy:  A Strategy Session for Articulating Grassroots Support to the NYS Legislature." Held at the University of Albany, and organized by the New York Solar Energy Industry Association (NYSEIA), the session was attended by various stakeholders interested in expanding and improving New York State's existing solar policies. The approximately 40 participants included a mix of representatives from NY-based solar businesses and advocacy groups.

On Tuesday January 30th, Solar One launched its new I Heart PV campaign, an advocacy effort that aims to grow grassroots support for pro-solar policies at the city and state government levels. During the Albany session, Solar One was able to introduce the campaign to other state actors, provide recommendations for statewide action and learn from the experience of other initiatives.

For those interested in hosting or attending a presentation about solar in NYC and the goals of the I Heart PV campaign, please contact Chris Neidl at neidl@solar1.org.
The Green Renter: The Solar-Powered Peace Sculpture: A Public Art Project by Fred George

Speaker: Fred George, Artist

Monday, February 11 at 7pm, FREE

Photographer and sculptor Fred George has built a reputation for delivering powerful, timely political messages through his diverse creative practice. Mr. George's more notable works include the iconic 9/11 portrait 'Ash Wednesday', and 'AK-47 Sculpture', a 3-meter tall crucifix assembled with machine guns. However, the artist's latest project may ultimately be his most provactive and ambitious: Solar Powered Peace Sculpture will be a 34-foot tall peace symbol constructed from 120 steel oil barrels affixed with the same number of fully functioning solar panels. Current plans will aim to install two identical versions of the work in Saarbrucken, Germany and New York City during the summer of 2008. Solar One's home of Stuyvesant Cove Park is currently considered the leading potential venue for the work.
