The First Green Innovator Teacher's Workshop: Standing Room Only
|
|
| On
Wednesday February 13, Solar One Educator Chris Kennedy introduced the
new Green Innovator curriculum, a green design and sustainable culture
curriculum designed by Chris for high school students and teachers, in
a free workshop at the Hall of Science in Corona, Queens. The
classroom was packed as 25 teachers learned how to bring green
innovation to their classroom coursework. Over 50 teachers who wanted
to attend couldn't due to lack of space, so watch this newsletter for
an announcement for the next workshop, and be sure to check out the new
Green Innovator website. |
The Green Renter: Infrastructure and Environmental Health Risks in
the South Bronx: A Review of the South Bronx Health and Policy Study
|
|
Speaker: Dr. Carlos Restrepo, New York University
Monday, February 18 at 7pm, FREE
Drawing on the findings of a collaborative research project
completed by New York University and the South Bronx community, this
discussion will focus on waste management, traffic hotspots, highways,
and zoning in the South Bronx and how the environmental health risks
associated with them can impact sensitive populations such as asthmatic
children attending schools located in close proximity to major
highways. Understanding the spatial relationships between these
environmental health risks and land use could be an important input to
environmental policy in the South Bronx.
Dr. Carlos Restrepo is a research scientist at the
Wagner School's Institute for Civil Infrastructure Systems (ICIS) at
NYU, and the project manager for the ICIS comoponent of the South Bronx
Environmental Health and Policy Study. His main areas of research
include infrastructure security, environmental quality and public
health, and environmental policy. In the area of infrastructure
security his work has concentrated on analyzing outage and failure data
in the electricity and oil & gas sectors, and studying
interdependencies among infrastructure systems.

USEPA Teams Up with Cell Phone Companies to Provide Recycling
|
| We recently ran a post on our blog, "Where Are Your Old Cellphones?",
with info on how to recycle old cellphones (and why it's a good thing
to do). Now the US Environmental Protection Agency has made it just
quite a bit easier to do.
The USEPA has recently teamed up with
leading cell phone manufacturers,
service providers, and retailers to encourage Americans to recycle
their
cell phones and accessories. In some cases, all you have to do is drop
them off at your local Sprint or AT&T store. In some cases- ahem,
Verizon- you'll need to mail them back to the manufacturer, but LG (for
one) will pay the postage.
Please see http://www.epa.gov/cellphones/
and http://www.epa.gov/cellphone/cell-recycling-locations.htm
to learn
more about the benefits of ewaste recycling, how and where cell
phones can be recycled, and what each company's recycling policies are.
And if your cell phone service provider/phone manufacturer hasn't
gotten on the recycling train, call 'em up and ask why not!
