Mad. Sq. KIDS FEST is this Saturday!

The Fall 2007 KIDS FEST is just a few days away! Come to Madison Square Park for a fun-filled Saturday. The Madison Square Park Conservancy is excited to host this wonderful festival for children and their families. The festival begins at 10 a.m. and will conclude at 3 p.m. Children will be able to make their way through the Spooky Maze and, at the end, pick-up a free pumpkin at the Pumpkin Patch. There will be fun egg crate critters that children can make and decorate as well as MAD.SQ. PARK coloring sheets for children to color away. MAD. SQ. BINGO, featuring fun facts about the park, will take place at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

apple seeds will present its science class, OOOHHH!!! AAAHHH!! IIICCCKKK!!!, at 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m. & 2 p.m. (Please sign-up at the apple seeds table). Sababa Toys will be on hand to present and raffle the “It’s a Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” game throughout the day. At 11 a.m., Hugh McMahon will present a unique and intricate pumpkin carving demonstration. Clowns from the "Big Apple Circus: Clowns to Go" will lead the Halloween Parade that starts at 12 noon, so make sure children are dressed in costume! No costume? Then children can have their face painted by Vital Children’s Theatre. Last but not least, KIDS FEST would not be complete without great live entertainment. The following groups will perform at the Time Out New York Kids Stage: The Deedle Deedle Dees at 10:30 a.m., TADA! Youth Theater at 12:30 p.m. and Opus Ditty and the Hoedown Gang at 1:30 p.m.

KIDS FEST is presented by the Madison Square Park Conservancy and New York Life with additional support from our friends and neighbors: Time Out New York Kids Magazine, apple seeds, Con Ed, Fidelity Investments, Sababa Toys, Whole Foods Market Chelsea, Vital Children’s Theatre and the Big Apple Circus: Clowns to Go.

London Plane Tree
Close-up of Bark
Q
: I was riding a bus across 23rd Street over the weekend and a few trees along the Southern edge of the park caught my eye. Could you tell me the name of the trees that have white bark which looks as though it is chipping off? They are so beautiful. I’d love to find out more about them.

A: The tree in question is called the London Plane Tree or Platanus x acerifolia. The most striking feature of the London Plane tree is its flaking bark that peels to reveal a lighter colored bark underneath. Brown, green and gray patches mark the smooth bark of this tree. I always liken it to camouflage. It will tolerate almost any soil condition: wet, dry acid, alkaline- you name it. Many consider this to be perhaps the best tree in the United States for lining streets. In some cases, this stately tree will grow anywhere from 70-100 feet.

Mad. Sq. Art: William Wegman's Around the Park is in its Final Stretch!
Since mid-September, William Wegman's video project, Around the Park, has been entertaining many Shake Shack diners and passers-by. Wegman's video work is displayed on
four outdoor monitors near Madison Square Park’s popular food kiosk, Shake Shack. The approximately seven-minute-long video stars Wegman’s favorite cast of characters as they enjoy a fall day in Madison Square Park. The video will run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. At 1 p.m. every weekday, there will be a short retrospective of Wegman’s video work. On Saturdays and Sundays at 1 p.m., The Hardly Boys and Dog Baseball will be screened. If you haven't seen this exquisite work you should find time in the next week or so to drop by. The video project will be on display through Sunday, October 28. Mad. Sq. Art: Roxy Paine also continues on view in the park through December 31, 2007. Please check our website to view more information about Mad. Sq. Artists.

Mad. Sq. Art is the free gallery without walls presented by the Madison Square Park Conservancy in the historic 6.2-acre park located at 5th Avenue and 23rd Street. Mad. Sq. Art is supported by Founding Partners: The Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation, Agnes Gund & Daniel Shapiro, Jill & Peter Kraus and Anonymous. Additional support is provided by the Henry Luce Foundation, the Leucadia Foundation and the Toby Lewis Philanthropic Fund of the Jewish Community Foundation of Cleveland.
